In Guam, where there are
many Catholics, we are currently in the preparation period leading up to
Easter, which will be celebrated in a few weeks. By the way, Easter is an
important holiday for Christians, as it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus
Christ, who was crucified and died, rising three days later.
The date of Easter
changes every year, and this year, Easter falls on Sunday, April 20th. The
40-day period leading up to Easter is called “Lent.” Devout
Christians and Catholics engage in various practices during Lent, but one of
the easiest practices for anyone—whether they are Christian or Catholic or
simply interested—is avoiding indulgent meals or giving up things they enjoy.
This practice serves to
remember the suffering that Jesus Christ endured and to impose some form of
hardship upon oneself. Since the people of Guam love meat, many choose to
reduce their meat consumption and increase their intake of seafood during this
time. As a result, many restaurants offer Lent menus focused on seafood.
It’s surprising to see
even KFC expand their seafood menu!
A local favorite, Kings,
a family restaurant originating from Guam, offers a variety of menus that
reflect the tastes of the people here. Naturally, they offer a special Lent
menu centered around seafood, catering to the many Catholics on the island.
Here is an outdoor
advertisement for Ruby Tuesday, an American franchise restaurant. In addition
to their popular steak and meat dishes, seafood is also a favorite on their
menu. During this time, the selection of seafood dishes increases
significantly, from appetizers to main courses, and even pasta.
These menus are
available to anyone, whether they are Christian or Catholic. While a hearty
steak or barbecue is certainly tempting, why not indulge in some luxurious
seafood occasionally? Now is the perfect opportunity to enjoy seafood!
