Airport-Barrigada

Hafa adai,

A journey begins at the airport with boarding a plane. The aircraft that takes us across the sea to foreign lands is impressive and dreamlike, soaring through the sky with grace. Many people likely admire planes as they evoke excitement and anticipation.

The Guam International Airport, used by tourists, is located right in the center of the island. It is well-known for its good access to Guam’s main shopping district, Tumon, the commercial center, Tamuning, and Hagatna, which is not only the economic hub but also a government district with numerous historical sites. Therefore, tourists enjoying Guam often find themselves looking up at planes flying overhead.

When driving around the airport area in a rental car, you might find yourself near it. On the other side of the airport from Tumon is the Barrigada area, and Route 8 connecting Barrigada and Hagatna is a perfect spot for plane watching. Depending on the weather and wind direction, you can see planes just before landing flying directly above you as you drive through here.

The photo above shows the view while driving on Route 8 towards Hagatna. The fence visible on the right side is part of the airport property. Route 8 runs along the airport.

With a roar, a plane deploying its landing gear approaches, right overhead—it’s quite an impressive sight. As I was in the car, it passed just above me.

In addition to commercial passenger planes, some areas of Guam International Airport are used by Cessna planes for optional tours and skydiving flights, so you can see these around the airport as well. The photo above seems to show a Cessna.

Once you start watching the planes take off and land, you may want to follow them closely, but unfortunately, doing so while driving is very dangerous. At such times, it’s best to take a break. There’s a McDonald’s along Route 8 where you can enjoy a coffee and watch the planes leisurely.

Just a few dozen meters away is the Kentucky Fried Chicken Barrigada location. Both restaurants have window-side seating where you can enjoy watching the planes take off and land at the airport.
