Hafa adai,
This time, I’m highlighting a long-established bakery that you should definitely visit if you have a car. It’s located in Hagåtña, an area with many tourist attractions.
Currently, there are no shuttle buses running to Hagåtña, making it a bit difficult for tourists to get to this area, but if you’re in Guam, it’s worth the trip. The bakery I’m introducing today is definitely a place you should check out if you can rent a car.
The name of the bakery is Main Street Delicatessen & Bakery. It opened about 15 years ago, but the owner’s family has been in the bakery business for over 100 years. Since then, the business has been passed down from father to daughter and now to granddaughter.
Inside the store, there’s a poster of the first owner, certified as a master of Guam’s traditional outdoor oven called “Hotnon.”
Although the bakery doesn’t have a sign, it’s well-known among locals. It operates only three days a week, from early morning until early afternoon, and it gets crowded, especially during the 7 AM and 8 AM rush as commuters stop by.
The store offers a variety of breads and baked goods, and their popular donuts often require a wait. On the day I visited, I waited about 20 minutes to finally get some. Freshly made or cooled down, these donuts are incredibly soft and delicious.
As befits a long-standing Guam bakery, traditional Chamorro snacks like Guyuria and Pan Tosta are also available.
There are also Chamorro light meals such as Motsiyas and Tamales, which are very popular among locals.
You can take these treats along for a drive or enjoy them sitting on a bench at nearby attractions. Be sure to savor the beloved flavors that have been passed down through generations.
